World Environment Day Celebrated in School: Beat Plastic Pollution

Every year on June 5th, people around the world come together to celebrate World Environment Day, a global initiative led by the United Nations to raise awareness and take action for environmental protection. This year’s theme, #BeatPlasticPollution, was a call to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainable living.
Our school enthusiastically participated in this important event, organizing a series of engaging and educational activities to inspire students to take action against plastic pollution. Here’s a glimpse of how we celebrated World Environment Day 2023!
1. Awareness Rally & Pledge Ceremony

The day began with an eco-awareness rally, where students marched around the school campus holding handmade posters and banners with powerful slogans like “Say No to Plastic!” and “Refuse, Reuse, Recycle!” Following the rally, students and teachers took a pledge to reduce single-use plastics in their daily lives.
2. Best Out of Waste Competition

To encourage creativity and recycling, a “Best Out of Waste” competition was held. Students used discarded plastic bottles, bags, and other waste materials to create useful and artistic items like planters, pen stands, and decorative pieces. The competition highlighted how waste can be transformed into something valuable.
3. Tree Plantation Drive

Understanding that a healthy environment goes beyond just reducing plastic, students participated in a tree plantation drive. Saplings were planted across the school garden, with each class adopting a tree to nurture. This initiative reinforced the importance of green cover in fighting pollution.
4. Eco-Friendly Alternatives Workshop
A special workshop was conducted to educate students on eco-friendly alternatives to plastic. They learned about:
- Using cloth bags instead of plastic bags
- Switching to steel or bamboo straws
- Choosing glass or metal water bottles over disposable ones
- Composting organic waste to reduce landfill burden
5. Street Play on Plastic Pollution
The drama club presented a powerful street play showcasing the harmful effects of plastic on marine life, soil, and human health. The performance left a lasting impact, motivating everyone to rethink their plastic consumption habits.
6. Clean-Up Campaign
Students and teachers joined hands for a clean-up drive around the school premises and nearby areas. They collected plastic waste, segregated it, and ensured proper disposal. The activity emphasized the importance of community responsibility in keeping our surroundings clean.
Conclusion: Small Steps, Big Impact
World Environment Day at our school was not just a one-day event but the beginning of a long-term commitment to sustainable living. By adopting small changes—like carrying reusable bags, avoiding plastic straws, and recycling—we can collectively make a huge difference in beating plastic pollution.

Let’s continue to protect our planet, not just on June 5th, but every single day!
